Archive Label 2003: A daimyo procession crosses the Nihonbashi bridge in Edo at the beginning of the trip to Kyoto. The feudal lord’s men are dressed in distinctive outfits and the tall banners display his family crest. The number of attendants accompanying the daimyo on their required visits to Edo was regulated in accordance with the rice output of their land holdings. The wealthiest daimyo traveled with about 130 foot soldiers and 300 servants and porters.
