Exhibition Label: "American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson Smith’s etching of "Carros" demonstrates that his style, his individual response to a subject, was constantly evolving. A decidedly modernist influence is visible in this print, for the twelfth-century French château and surrounding landscape are rendered in geometric forms that call to mind the late paintings of Paul Cezanne. The lines are straight and in some areas, such as the château, they lie parallel to one another, much like Cezanne’s brushstrokes. Smith uses cross-hatching to define the dark brooding sky overhead as well as the shadows washing over the darkened landscape below; he accentuates contrasts of light and dark by careful wiping of the plate.
