"American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson
An architect by training, A. C. Webb deeply admired Europe’s ancient buildings, which he feared would be destroyed by modern industry. Like a number of artists in this exhibition, Webb became an expatriate, returning to the United States only on special occasions.
In 1929 Webb was invited by the Chicago Society of Etchers to serve on the jury of its annual exhibition and to create the 1929 annual print, which was mailed out to all of the members. His contribution, "Gothic Lace," was issued in an edition of five hundred prints, all them bearing the blind stamp of the Society. Depicting one of the portals to Notre Dame de Paris, Webb’s etching suggests the way light washes over the intricately carved stonework, and the way it passes through the magnificent leaded-glass windows.
