Miyamoto Saburō often depicted the landscape in the Shinshū area near Nagano prefecture, where he was born. Much of Shinshū is still very rural and rice fields are typically planted in the valleys. Here, the thatched house stands on a small raised area surrounded by rice fields, as was normal in the countryside. The young rice shoots have already been transplanted into the fields, which are flooded for the spring growing season.
