Exhibition Label: "Images of the Journey," Jun-2005, Hillary Pedersen Utagawa Kunisada also created a version of the 53 stations of the To-kaido-, these with beautiful women superimposed upon the familiar landscapes of Hiroshige’s version. Kunisada has changed the orientation of the print from horizontal to vertical, in order to accommodate the woman and the top of the large, knarled tree. The woman in the print, although separated from the roadside scene by the clouds, is dressed like a traveler, complete with a walking staff.
