American Dream
Earl Iversen’s photograph expresses a tangible sadness through the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of the American Dream. Emblematic of American freedom and acceptance, Lady Liberty typically portrays hope and opportunity. Here she appears downcast, possibly reflecting disappointment in the divide drawn along racial lines that persists into the present. The boldness of her spiked crown coupled with her sorrowful face may bring to mind depictions of a crucified Jesus. —Agustín Hayes
