Ben Shahn was born in Kovno, Lithuania, and immigrated with his family to New York at the age of six. After finishing elementary school, he was an apprentice for a lithographer. He studied biology at New York University and studied art at City College and the National Academy of Design. This delightful still life of flowers in a vase may have been painted prior to October 29, 1929, or “Black Thursday,” when news of a major stock market crash triggered the global economic downturn known as the Great Depression. During the 1930s Shahn began to incorporate his political views into his art.
