Exhibition Label: “Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle Robert Mapplethorpe created portrait photographs of celebrities and stars during Warhol’s era. He also often worked in series. This work portrays writer William S. Burroughs and musician Patti Smith, about two years after Smith’s now-classic punk rock record Horses was released. Warhol knew Mapplethorpe and created a portrait of him.
