Landscape IV contains the primary features of traditional Chinese landscape paintings -rugged mountains, travelers, and a simple scholar’s retreat - but with a disconcerting perspective and quick, abbreviated brushwork. Powerful, delightful and provocative at the same time, Ding here transforms the Chinese monumental landscape tradition yet once more to express a personal vision of the meaning of landscape and of the Chinese tradition of landscape painting.
