Exhibition Label: "Remembering the Family Farm: 150 Years of American Prints," 24-Mar-2001-3-Je-2001, Steve Goddard Nesbitt recalls that the barns in this print were derived from a watercolor he did as a commission for Standard Oil of New Jersey and that he “added the two farm couples and set it all in northeast Kansas near the Nebraska border. There’s the sense of an oncoming winter storm; it’s cold […] These are small farmers who will make out okay only as long as their health holds out.” (Retif and Salzer, no. 41) Rural etiquette dictated that the man should visit out of the car, while the woman could stay inside.
