Exhibition Label: "Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper," Jun-2001, Stephen Goddard When it was noted that Marcaccio’s images of brushstrokes and symbols resemble code dictionaries he replied, “What you call a lexicon is, for me, a multiplicity of empirical reminders, in the form of notes, rather than setting up a system of forms that I would recycle forever.” Perhaps this is why we see subtle permutations of common symbols rather than straightforward renderings of, for example, peace symbols, dollar signs, male and female symbols, and the hammer and sickle.
