Sum of the Parts: Recent Works on Paper
Stephen Goddard, curator
North Balcony, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas

This exhibition of about twenty-five works from the permanent collection will showcase prints and drawings created during the last few decades by a wide variety of contemporary American and European artists, including such well-known figures as Kiki Smith, Robert Rauschenberg, Barbara Krueger, Enrique Chagoya and Bruce Conner. The pieces all have complex construction in common. Each work presents smaller units in combination to produce a larger whole, often resulting in huge installations. Some of the pieces instead focus on tiny detail, creating completely new vocabularies or microcosmic worlds with dashes of color or calligraphic lines.
