Exhibition Label: "Albert Bloch: Prints and Drawings," Jan-2014, Stephen Goddard The title of this work derives from the sixth movement of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, Alma Maria Mahler: Songs, “Laue Sommernacht in A Major (Otto Julius Bierbaum).” Bierbaum (1865-1910) was an important German writer. The drawing is closely related to Bloch’s 1913 painting Sommernacht (Summer Night) and may be a study for it.
