Archive Label 2003: Susan Folwell has incorporated imagery from Northwest Coast Indian culture into her pottery decoration. As the sharing of images and information between various peoples increases, potters use material from a wide range of sources, often appropriating design elements without considering their spiritual underpinnings. Exhibition Label: American Indian Art at the Spencer Museum Sept 6 - Oct 19-2003 Jody and Susan Folwell draw on a wide range of cultures for their imagery. In this jar the designs of the Northwest Coast are used for their abstract qualities rather than as symbols. In her recent work Susan Folwell has depicted colorful subjects from popular culture as well as these sgraffito (scratched and etched) designs that are characteristic of Jody’s work.
