Inked Bodies

Nick Bubash’s travels to India contributed to his self-described “multi-denominational” work, adding a new layer to this monument-like circus figure. Black arm bands, carp, and suns each have specific cultural meanings. When these images are combined on a white body, they become commodities that are selected based on personal taste. In the context of the carnival implied
by the setting, they also become objects for audiences
to observe.

Nicholas “Nick” Bubash has been a professional tattoo artist since 1972. His lithograph, Tattooed Guy, suggests the carnival world of small-town U.S.A., but a closer look at the tattooes on Tattooed Guy suggests a more global outlook.
