"Inspired by Japan," Mar-2003, Cori Shrman
Dow applied Japanese-style composition in all the media he employed, whether lithography, painting, photography, or fabric design. This fabric stencil cut in Japanese mulberry paper, now attributed to Dow, was from the estate of Helen Hyde, an artist also featured in this exhibition. Dow visited Hyde in 1903 while she resided in Tokyo and was in turn introduced to the Japanese woodcut professionals with whom Hyde collaborated. During his stay in Japan, Dow studied color woodcut production, ceramic methods, and textile dying techniques, learning firsthand the practical concerns of creating the arts he so admired.
