Label texts

Archive Label 2003: Ya Ming spent the 1940s painting propaganda cartoons and designing woodblock prints. In 1953 he began to study the literati tradition of painting and developed a style that was a synthesis of the past and the present. Bold strokes of black define the mountains and trees, and washes applied over and around them evoke the moist, lush climate of Ya Ming's homeland in south China.
