"Using the Past to Serve the Present in 20th Century Chinese Painting," Oct-2006, Ai-lian Liu, Asian Art Intern
As a guohua artist and graphic designer, Wang Weibao brings elements of decorative design into his delightful scenes of southern China. In this exquisite view of a village by the river, we see the artist’s expressive brushwork and
sensitivity to composition. Lyrical and “traditional” as the idyllic beauty of rural life may initially appear, modern motifs also adorn the seemingly timeless landscape. A towboat in the background reflects changes brought about by modernization in China.
