Past Presence
The photograph on the bottom by Mark Klett was made as part of the Rephotographic Survey Project. Klett and the other artists working on this project recreated documentary photographs originally made during geological surveys of the American West during the 1860s and ‘70s. Using photographs like the one on the top by Timothy O’Sullivan, they located the vantage points that the original photographers used and attempted to replicate the technical choices they made. The Rephotographic Survey Project reveals natural and human-made changes in the landscape over time.
