Exhibition Label: "American Etchers Abroad, 1880-1939," Apr-2004, Reed Anderson "Palestine" served as an illustration for James Greenleaf Whittier’s poem of the same name, published in Poets & Etchers (1882). "Palestine" is a fine example of Robert Swain Gifford’s working technique. All of the lines are of equal depth, an effect he achieved by bathing the plate once in the acid. Only the lines that hold ink are printed, for Gifford eschewed such special effects as plate tone and retroussage. The freedom of drawing in this work is consistent with the loose style advocated by the founders of the etching revival. Only the most salient details are noted, yet they evoke the exotic locale.
