Archive Label 1999:
This 20th-century plate derives from a dinner service commissioned in 1790 by the Crown Prince of Denmark, possibly as a gift for Catherine the Great of Russia. Each piece is painted with a different flower copied from the encyclopedia of Danish flowers (Flora Danica). Over 12,000 separate brush strokes are required to complete each plate. The painter marks the finished piece on the underside with her initials, next to the three wavy blue lines that signify Royal Copenhagen.
