Archive Label 2003: Among the most famous copies after Dürer are the engravings by the Italian artist Marcantonio Raimondi of Dürer’s Life of the Virgin woodcuts. Dürer, who visited Italy twice, was enraged that Raimondi not only copied his prints but that he had the audacity to copy his monogram as well. This may have inspired the admonition that he gave to the 1511 bound editions of the Life of the Virgin and the small woodcut Passion, “Woe to you! Thieves and imitators of other people’s labour and talents. Beware of laying your audacious hand upon this work!”
