Exhibition Label: "Windmills to Workshops: Lawrence and the Visual Arts," Jul-2004, Kate Meyer For nearly 30 years, Associate Professor of Sculpture Richard Gillespie has influenced fine arts students at KU. Fiercely committed to his teaching and his own distinctive aesthetic, Gillespie declares that sculpture “involves a continual research of one’s self.” His love of craft can be seen in this untitled drawing, which contains numerous references to Gillespie’s practice as a sculptor, such as the phrase “All roads lead to sculpture.” His irreverent sense of humor and love of wordplay also figure prominently in his use of the moniker “Tito Iron Works,” a fictitious fabricator and allusion to the industrial materials used to create his sculptures. The drawing is dedicated to his friend and fellow artist, the late Richard Hollander of Kansas City.
