Resounding Spirit: Japanese Contemporary Art of the 1960s

English-born painter and writer Brion Gysin, best-known as the inventor of the “cut-up” technique of language-collage that he pioneered with American writer and painter William S. Burroughs (1914-1998), was fascinated by and experimented with language and abstract structure throughout his career. The rhythmic patterns used in this drawing further demonstrate his serious interest in Japanese and Arabic calligraphy.
