Exhibition Label: "Conflicting Memories," Oct-2003, Steve Goddard Memories of Childhood, Roger Shimomura’s book of lithographed images and letterpress quotes, portrays his experiences while interned in Camp Minidoka, Idaho. Shimomura spent nearly three years as a young child with his paternal grandmother and parents as his three uncles fought in World War II for the United States. Inspired by his grandmother’s diaries, Shimomura represents the small human details of daily life within the context of the internment camp. Birthday cake and barbed wire, an uncle leaving camp with an American flag in hand, a moment of conversation with another child across a boundary of confinement - express intimate memories in a distanced pop-art style. Through transparent overlays, individual memory is placed in high relief against a backdrop of collective memory and national policy.
