E. Simms Campbell was a prominent African-American cartoonist who produced illustrations for Esquire magazine regularly from the 1930s through the 1950s. This cartoon represents the need for diversity in representation, perhaps indicative of Campbell’s own experience in the predominantly white workplace of mainstream U.S. magazines.
