Bold Women

Honoring Her portrays Sacagawea, the historical Shoshone woman whose deep knowledge of the land helped the Lewis and Clark expedition. Melanie Andrew Yazzie depicts Sacagawea as a gingerbread doll beside the quote “a woman with a party of men is a token of peace” by William Clark. 1812 is the death date recorded for Sacagawea at age 24, while Native American oral tradition says she died in 1884. With this work Yazzie urges us to honor the women whose stories have so often been erased throughout history.
