This postcard was made in 1911 to celebrate the 50th birthday of Kansas. The artist featured a woman posing as if she herself is the state of Kansas. She sits on a throne over an abundance of fruit and vegetables and holds a bundle of sunflowers, the state flower. These symbols represent the rich opportunities offered to people if they moved to Kansas at the time. Look closely at this image. What people, plants, animals, and other resources do you recognize? Design your own postcard celebrating your home state. What symbols or characteristics will you include?
Exhibition Label: “C.A. Seward: Artist and Draftsman,” Feb-2010, Kate Meyer Seward was commissioned to create this postcard promoting Kansas and commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Kansas Day -January 29, 1861, the day the state entered the Union.
