Maria Martinez is considered the most famous Pueblo potter and is also among the most talented potters in the world. She is credited with developing the burnished black-on-black style demonstrated by this jar. Like many Pueblo potters, Martinez learned the art of pottery from her family and then shared that knowledge with her husband, son, and daughter-in-law. This jar is the direct inspiration for the prints nearby, created by artist Rose B. Simpson as a tribute to Martinez.
