Archive label for Palmer collection exhibit, date unknown: The ruling kings (Oba) of Benin would order heads cast in brass or bronze to commemorate their mothers. The hair style, beaded lattice-work headdress, and strands of beads around the neck were all worn by rulers and their relatives as symbols of authority.
