Archive Label 2003: This netsuke is carved in the shape of a demon striking hyoshigi together. Hyoshigi are wooden sticks that were struck together by neighborhood volunteers while they called out to remind people to put out their fires before going to bed. Mischievous demons were often depicted in human guise for humorous effect.
