Archive Label 2003: The careful repair of this bowl in gold lacquer testifies to Japanese enthusiasm for punch’ong tea bowls. Japanese collectors commonly used this method to restore prized ceramics. This bowl is an example of a common punch’ong ware that was dipped into white slip and then covered in glaze. To make firing economical, bowls were stacked one inside the other on beads of clay, which would leave spur marks when separated after fiing.
