Exhibition Label:
"For Life's Sake: Arts from Africa," Oct-1983, Reinhild Kauenhoven Janzen
This cup was used for the ceremonial drinking of palm wine. The geometric interlace pattern is a hallmark of traditional Kuba design. It appears not only on carved containers and on masks, but also on embroidered palm fiber textiles. This cup was originally carved with a handle.
