The fleshy, ebullient face is crowned by a large head ornament which in Cameroon society is associated with specific duties or roles, such as eldership, kingship or priesthood. On this particular mask, the crown shows a ring of perforations which once supported a ring of carved wooden arrows, now missing. This circle of arrows was the sign of smiths, who are highly esteemed among the people of important Grasslands smelting centers.
