Threads of History: Textiles from the Spencer Museum of Art
Archive Label date unknown: In an overshot coverlet, the warp was usually natural-color linen, and the weft was a one-color wool homespun, as in this example. “Floating” a colored weft over the weave of the background gives character to the coverlet design, which is complemented by a deep fringe. It is rare for a coverlet of this age to have its hand-knotted fringe intact and to be in near-pristine condition.
