Exhibition Label: "Quilts! Imported Fabrics, American Treasures," May-2004, Barbara Brackman Pillar prints draped American windows and beds and were layered into whole-cloth quilts between 1800 and 1860. Quilts that emphasize the pillar print, like this whole-cloth piece, tend to date from early in that period. After 1840, when the fabric became passé for interior design, quilters continued to salvage patches from their old drapes.
