This photograph depicts a Hupa mother from Northern California weaving a basket as her baby sits in a sit-down carrier, similar to the miniature example on display. Hupa babies are wrapped in soft deerskin and strapped into a carrier when they are 10 days old. The child remains in the carrier until it learns to walk, except during bathing and exercise.
