Archive Label 2003: The incised decoration on this large platter represents a tree peony, the Chinese “king of the flowers.” In China, this showy flower is regarded as a symbol of good fortune, high honor, and the spring season. The Chinese variety of tree peony (botan; Paeonis suffruticosa) is different from the type of peony found in most western gardens, commonly known as the bush peony.
