Exhibition Label: “Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle This series of Polaroids are displayed loose on this flat surface to mimic the way that Warhol worked in a Polaroid portrait session, with the resulting pictures laid out in rows on a black Art Deco desk in his studio. These three men appear to be friends. Warhol photographed each man alone, and then the three together. While the men look a bit ill at ease in the individual shots, they seem to loosen up and enjoy themselves in the group poses, yielding more complex and interesting compositions. Given that Warhol produced thousands of photographs in the 1980s, it may not be surprising that the identity of these men is unknown. The presentation style of the three men, dressed in dark business suits with short haircuts, is reminiscent of ‘80s artist Robert Longo’s series portraying “suits” as if dancing, or falling, called Men in the City (1981).
