Exhibition Label: “Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle Celebrity fashion designer Calvin Klein and star model Brooke Shields were closely associated around 1980, about the time when Warhol likely snapped these pictures. Shields became the pinnacle of celebrityhood, and famously modeled Calvin Klein’s jeans on gigantic billboards in New York’s Times Square. Her billboard images advertising the latest fashion and the intimacy of tight jeans sum up many aspects of the production of celebrity in the 1980s. These unposed photographs shot on the fly typify Warhol’s fondness for taking photographs of celebrities when they may not have expected it. Are these true candid images, or those that reinforce a previously self-defined presentation?
