Inked Bodies

David Yarritu, the shirtless man on the right, is a former member of the 1980s British band ABC. Yarritu was hired for his unconventional looks and stage presence. The camera flash reflects against the snake tattoo on his upper arm as Yarritu arches into the embrace of the unidentified man on the left. For many queer people, tattooing is an act of reclamation, finding beauty in
bodies that are undervalued by society.

“Big Shots: Andy Warhol, Celebrity Culture and the 1980s,” Aug-2009, Susan Earle
David Yarritu, shown here without a shirt in each photograph, is a former member of the 1980s British New Wave band ABC. The only American in the group, Yarritu was hired for his looks onstage and in videos; he did not sing or play music. ABC was one of the more popular New Wave bands in the early 1980s, and they had several synthesizer-driven, dance-pop hits. Today Yarritu is a freelance photographer based in New York City.
