Wearing a traditional type of underwear known as fundoshi, such life-size, semi-nude depictions of men are rarely seen in Japanese art. This was most likely painted in the early 1930s (note the waved, highly stylish coiffure); Japan at this time was increasingly militaristic and such a depiction most likely depicted a kind of national self-confidence that accompanied an expanding Japanese Empire.
