"Staffordshire Chimney Ornaments from the Nineteenth Century in the Collection of The University of Kansas Museum of Art," Jun-1973, Lea Rosson
Dogs were a common subject for Staffordshire work. The grey hounds were modeled after prize-winners, and are often shown with hares in their mouths or at their feet. The pillar under the dog's chest prevents the figure from collapsing during firing.
