Visible and Divisible America: In Conversation with the 2019–2020 KU Common Book

Koo Kyung Sook draped her body with fur soaked in photochemicals and laid atop photosensitive paper to produce this print. The resulting image physically resembles a human form but also evokes the metaphysical, emotional, or psychological realm of the self. The pattern also suggests an echo or ripple of the pain we feel, or the ghosts we leave behind.

“Textures of Interpretation: Meaning and Materiality in Global Contemporary Art," Jan-2010, Sooa Im
For this pair of prints, Koo encased her body in faux fur that had been dowsed in photo chemicals, and then laid down across a matrix of photosensitive paper. As a result, an image of her body dissolved into the intricate web of fibers and fur, conveying an unexpected sensation of texture. The organic surface of fur and hair that was reflected in various orientations not only enhances the texture of the work, but it also reveals the dynamic aspect of this photographic performance.
