Exhibition Label: "Nature/Natural," Jul-2014, Kris Ercums The inscription on this screen indicates that it was painted in Kansas City in 1979 by Kwan S. Wong [Huang Junshi], who studied with Dr. Chu-tsing Li, professor emeritus of Chinese art history at the University of Kansas. Since 1981, Wong worked as a specialist on Chinese painting at auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, continuing to paint on his own time in the respected tradition of Chinese amateur artists. The dynamic bamboo is rendered on a shimmering gold background, a technique derived from Japanese painting traditions.
