Bold Women
Salish artist Jaune Quick-To-See Smith has been a driving force and leading figure in contemporary art and a lifelong champion of Native American artists. Growing up, she traveled with her father, who was a horse trader. In this print, the artist depicts a horse in profile, a recurring subject in her work. Portrayals of horses might also reference ancient Native American rock carvings or petroglyphs of horses. Smith fought to preserve petroglyph sites, marking the historic presence of Indigenous cultures.
