Archive Label 2003: The yellow skin of this snuff bottle has been carved into a cock standing on a rock and a cockscomb flower. Together, these three things form a rebus for “promotion after promotion in the bureaucratic civil service.” Civil service was the primary employment for educated men in 19th-centrury China.
