Archive Label 2003: This set of lacquer dishes has designs beautifully executed in the raised lacquer or takamakie technique. Each dish is decorated with a different fruit: loquat, cherry, grapes, peach, and Buddha-hand citron. Buddha-hand citron is an aromatic, but inedible, fruit thought to resemble the form of Buddha’s hand. The Japanese name, busshukan, is a homophone for the words “happiness” and “longevity,” making the fruit a symbol for the same.
