Ladi Kwali grew up creating traditional Nigerian earthenware pottery using centuries-old construction and decorative techniques. In 1954, she joined the Pottery Training Centre in Abuja, present-day Suleja, where she learned global pottery traditions. Kwali quickly became one of Nigeria’s first female potters whose work was admired as fine art rather than functional objects.
