“Holding Pattern: New Works at the Spencer Museum,” Sep-2014, Kris Ercums
The art of Ke-Sook Lee is largely autobiographical, drawing inspiration from her roots in two countries, and from her work as a professional artist while enjoying her roles as mother, homemaker, and gardener. While growing up in Korea, Lee shared a room with her grandmother and great-grandmother, both expert needlewomen who taught Lee how to sew. In this work, Lee deploys a technique inspired by quilting, stitching together pieces of tarlatan and paper in a grid on which she has interspersed organic glyphs evocative of East Asian calligraphy.
